Problem
The question
Singhvi, Sabary, Bar-Lev and Yaakobi, Conditional Entropies of k-Deletion/Insertion Channels, arXiv:2407.10026v2, Section VII-A, ask:
While we provide a complete characterization of the sequences that minimize input entropy, the precise identification of the sequences that maximize input entropy for the 2-deletion and 2-insertion channels is still unresolved. Determining these sequences and the associated maximal entropy values remains an important open direction.
Issue #19173 fixes the formal statement. For a received binary word, the posterior on uniformly transmitted inputs is proportional to the number of increasing index sets realizing the received word as a subsequence. Entropy is Shannon entropy in bits. The claim gives the two alternating families and their complements, the exact deletion and large insertion maxima, and the finite insertion cases of received lengths two, three and four.
Statement echo
The Lean claim in D5/S3/Entropy/SinghviMaxInputEntropy.lean inlines the two posterior definitions, quantifies over the same finite binary words, uses the frozen embedding count and Shannon entropy, divides by Real.log 2, and states all seven clauses of the preregistration. The public result : claim is the settling declaration.
Motivation
Our foothold
The source settles the minimizing sequences for two deletions but leaves the maximizing sequences and values open. Alternating words are proved here to maximize the input entropy for every positive deletion length and for insertion lengths at least five, with the exact exceptional small lengths recorded in the claim.
Gap
Missing bridges
The question is explicit in Section VII-A of arXiv:2407.10026v2 and was preregistered in issue #19173 before formalization. The bounded literature screen covered the source, its ITW predecessor arXiv:2202.03024, Atashpendar's thesis arXiv:2003.11663, the DOI, author searches and the phrases “deletion channel” with “input entropy” and “insertion channel” with entropy and alternating. No settlement was found in that scope. Completeness is ASSUMED-UNVERIFIED.
Route
Proposed approach
For a binary word with run lengths $r_1,\ldots,r_R$, classify the positive two-deletion multiplicities into contributions from two deletions in one run, from nonadjacent runs, and from components of adjacent run pairs joined through singleton runs. This gives the exact joint count distribution and the deletion run functional.
For deletion, strict convexity and a local shortening argument remove every run of length at least three. Jensen's inequality then shows that every remaining nonalternating run profile has strictly larger collision functional than the two alternating profiles. The exact alternating distribution gives the closed deletion value.
For insertion, grouping supersequence masks by run components gives lower bounds in terms of the number of excess runs. Strict scalar comparisons and Jensen's inequality prove the alternating minimizers of the collision functional for lengths at least five; the received lengths two, three and four are evaluated directly. The entropy ordering follows because, at fixed total mass, Shannon entropy is the negative normalized collision functional.
Falsifier
What would falsify this route
The result would not settle the source question if the posterior used a different input distribution, if embeddings were counted without multiplicity of increasing index sets, if deletion and insertion lengths were interchanged, or if the theorem omitted the equality cases. A counterexample to any of the strict run comparisons or to one of the finite insertion cases would also falsify the stated settlement.
Evidence
Evidence to collect
The settling module is D5/S3/Entropy/SinghviMaxInputEntropy.lean; its public declarations are claim and result, with result : claim. The supporting modules are D5/S1/Words/TwoDeletionRunDecks.lean, D5/S3/Entropy/AlternatingTwoDeletionCounts.lean, D5/S3/Entropy/BinaryRunSupersequenceCounts.lean, D5/S3/Entropy/TwoDeletionRunEntropyBounds.lean and D5/S3/Entropy/TwoDeletionChannelEntropy.lean.
The formalization reuses the frozen embedding and entropy owners. The supporting escape witnesses are twoRunBlocks_linear, count_alt_two, jointWordSum_runs, deletion_abstract_bridge_gap and actual_deletion_run_score; the settling result is content and has admission basis open-problem-resolution (#19173; Proved). The axiom closure of every public declaration is contained in {propext, Classical.choice, Quot.sound}; no additional axiom or sorry is used.
The preregistered experiment is pinned to commit 9c5a3fc3c006c09633188eb20e4f47ac504c2522. Command: python3 check.py, run from that directory; exit code 0; script SHA-256 bc03924138dbcc4517b3f7f5228d69699ec19ee932d348728f425ed071d829e3; result PASS. It exhaustively checks deletion maximizers, the alternating closed value, constant minimizers and the deletion run formula for received lengths 1–12; it checks the insertion embedding-count multiset for lengths 2–12 and insertion maximizers for lengths 2–16, with the alternating closed value for lengths 5–16. These are finite computations.
Escape registration
Four-slot registration is unfinished under issue #19498. No DTR-Declared status is claimed and no Reg mirror is included. The gap is a checked source reconstruction and realization bridge, lawful enrolled-template readout, actual-positive intervention, role and anchor sensitivity, and observational dependence for the complete theorem telescopes. The issue includes the supporting public theorems, the settling result and these published owner declarations: D5.S1.Words.AssociatedMersenne.RunTupleBijection.splitData_positive, D5.S1.Words.AssociatedMersenne.RunTupleBijection.splitData_reconstruct, D5.S1.Words.AssociatedMersenne.RunTupleBijection.splitData_alternating, D5.S1.Words.Complexity.ExactDecks.Growth.ExactDeckCore.scatteredCount_eq_count_sublistsLen, and D5.S3.Entropy.DeletionChannelEntropyOrdering.embeddings_eq_count. The public owner definition D5.S1.Words.AssociatedMersenne.RunTupleBijection.splitData is mirrored with its defining expression.

For $w=1001010101$ and its tail $v=001010101$, the run lengths are $(1,2,1,1,1,1,1,1,1)$ and $(2,1,1,1,1,1,1,1)$. Put $f(t)=t\log_2 t$. Substitution in the deletion run formula gives $\Phi(w)=26f(3)+f(6)+320+f(4)+f(10)$ and $\Phi(v)=24f(3)+f(6)+252+f(10)$, hence $\Phi(w)-\Phi(v)=76+6\log_2 3$. The alternating formula gives $\Phi(A_{10})-\Phi(A_9)=76+3\log_2 3+11\log_2 11-10\log_2 10$. Their difference is $\log_2(270000000000/285311670611)<0$, since $27\cdot10^{10}=270000000000<285311670611=11^{11}$. Thus the universal lower bound by the alternating prefix increment is false. This arithmetic derivation is a prose proof; no separate Lean theorem for it is claimed.
- Open — separate histogram formulation: A separately packaged multiset histogram identity is outside this settlement. The mechanism used for the settled claim is the weighted slide-class realization, rather than an additional histogram statement.
- Computed: The pinned experiment in Evidence verifies deletion maximizers, closed values, constant minimizers and the run formula at received lengths 1–12; the insertion count multiset at lengths 2–12; insertion maximizers at lengths 2–16 and the alternating closed value at lengths 5–16. Its command, exit code and SHA-256 are recorded in the experiment entry. No uniform extension is inferred from these finite computations.
- Open — asymptotic deficits: For a periodic nonalternating word with cyclic run lengths $c_i$ and period length $p$, the proposed limiting deficits $p^{-1}\sum_i f(c_i+1)-2$ for deletion and $2p^{-1}\sum_i f(c_i)$ for insertion, including $\log_2 3-4/3$ and $4/3$ for $(001)^t$, are not established by the delivered Lean statements or the pinned finite experiment. Here $f(t)=t\log_2 t$. These remain proposed asymptotic formulas.
- Open — majorization comparison: The proposed obstruction comparing the largest deletion multiplicities of $(0011)^3$ and the alternating length-12 word is not a theorem of this delivery, and the pinned experiment does not report the two largest-multiplicity readings. The proof uses the collision functional directly and makes no universal majorization claim.
- Proved — sibling conjecture, separate result:
D5.S3.Combinatorics.Hamming.AtashpendarKappaAlternatingRefutation.resultstates the refutation of the related $\kappa^2$ conjecture; it is not on the settling module's dependency path. - Open — entropy-gap growth: Uniform asymptotic growth of this problem's entropy gaps is not established here. The delivered result proves strict positivity at each nonalternating word in the stated lengths.
- Open: The corresponding maximization questions for $k\ge3$ and for nonuniform inputs remain outside this settlement.
- Open: Exhaustive worldwide literature completeness and priority remain unverified.
ASSUMED-UNVERIFIED
Unverified assumptions
The literature screen is bounded and does not establish exhaustive worldwide novelty or priority. The experiment is evidence for finite ranges and regression checks; the universal conclusion is carried by the Lean kernel-checked theorem.
